Austria – Energy Transition TOP
A new study simulates the scenario of 100% electricity generation from renewable energy and the load in a one year model on hourly values.

The study shows how the individual new renewable forms of energy are superimposed in their production curves and cover the hourly load. The resulting generation peaks and the necessary balancing energy demand as well as the required storage capacities for a self-sufficient production structure are shown.

The study provides essential foundations for strategic decisions for the expansion of renewable energy production.

German energy policy shouldn’t be a blueprint TOP
Germany has enacted a comprehensive legislative package for its future energy policy. This package aims to accelerate the shift towards an energy system 2050 which broadly relies on renewable energy sources.

Against the background of the German energy policy the World Energy Council Germany asked energy experts across the world for their expectations about the German energy transition. A Slide Set of the results was published recently by the German Member Committee: German energy policy is not a blueprint for other countries. Moreover, it is seen as a risk to European security of supply in the electricity sector.

Event: World Energy Trilemma TOP
WEC Senior Fellow Karl Rose, spoke of concerns about growing demand for energy worldwide, adding that countries and industries must fulfil society’s and businesses requirement for energy. He emphasised balancing the energy trilemma, which requires not
only a high security of supply, but also that energy reaches all while minimizing environmental costs.

Investments in Energy Infrastructure TOP
The IEA estimates that meeting the world's energy needs will require expenditures on
the energy-supply infrastructure of approximately USD 51 trillion within the period 2014 to 2040. Nearly two-thirds of energy supply investment takes place in non-OECD countries. But ageing infrastructure and climate policies also create large requirements across the OECD.

In this context, WEC-Germany conducted a survey in November 2014 and asked for the current investment climate.

A presentation with the complete results is given below.

Three years after Fukushima TOP
The new plan, which sets policies for the next 20 years, described nuclear power as one of the key 'base-load electricity sources,' a term the government uses to describe types that can stably generate power at a low cost 24 hours a day. The government will 'promote reactivation of nuclear reactors' if they clear the new safety tests laid out by the Nuclear Regulation Authority, the 78-page policy paper states. Those tests are based on standards established by the NRA after the Fukushima meltdowns.

WEC Austria Workshop on Energy Efficiency TOP
The workshop held on February, 20th, 2014 in Vienna was addressed by the question about implementing the Energy Efficiency Directive. The new Energy Efficiency Directive establishes a common framework of measures for the promotion of energy efficiency within the EU in order to ensure the achievement of the EU’s 2020 20 % headline target on energy efficiency and to pave the way for further energy efficiency improvements beyond that date. It lays down rules designed to remove barriers in the energy market and overcome market failures that impede efficiency in the supply and use of energy, and provides for the establishment of indicative national energy efficiency targets for 2020.

13th to 17th October 2013 22nd World Energy Congress, Daegu, Korea
The World Energy Council (WEC) has called on policymakers and leaders to get real to ensure the world's energy future. Each government should tackle the “energy trilemma” – depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution and climate change.
WEC Secretary General Christoph Frei urged governments to have determination when setting up clear and robust policy frameworks, focusing on technology development and managing their carbon budget for balanced energy supply around the world.

WEC Austria Workshop "Energy Transformation" TOP
The EU goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80–95 % by 2050 has serious implications for our energy system. We need to be far more energy efficient. About two thirds of our energy should come from renewable sources. Electricity production needs to be almost emission-free, despite higher demand. Our energy system has not yet been designed to deal with such challenges. By 2050, it must be transformed.

WEC Austria hosted the workshop “The Energy Transformation - Energy for a Sustainable Future” to discuss what technical changes are needed to make possible these challenges.
