While greenhouse gases can be reduced in many sectors by converting the electricity system to renewable energy sources, other solutions must be found for other sectors. Industrial processes and heavy transport are difficult or even impossible to decarbonise without hydrogen or hydrogen derivatives.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although the EU will\u00a0increase\u00a0its own production in the future, the demand will still exceed the production. Thus,\u00a0the EU is dependent on the import of hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives\u00a0to decarbonize sectors that are reliant on hydrogen. In order to analyze and quantify this import demand, the\u00a0European regional group of the World Energy Council (WEC), together with the\u00a0Observatoire\u00a0Mediterran\u00e9en\u00a0de l\u2019Energie (OME),\u00a0carried out a study on imports of\u00a0decarbonised\u00a0hydrogen to Europe. Representatives from OME and the member committees of the WEC from the following countries were represented in the Steering Committee:\u00a0Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia\u00a0and\u00a0Estonia. The main author was\u00a0Prof.\u00a0Marco Baroni. Below are\u00a0some of the\u00a0conclusions of the study.
