OBITUARY
RICHARD SCHENZ †

Born in Vienna in 1940, Schenz studied technical physics at the Vienna University of Technology and had dealt with the subject of nuclear physics at the Seibersdorf reactor center during his diploma thesis. After several years of scientific work, he joined OMV in 1969, where he had been a member of the Executive Board since 1988 and Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer since 1992. He retired at the end of 2001.

Schenz was a recipient of the “Great Golden Medal of Honor” of the WKÖ and the “Great Golden Medal of Honor with Star for Services to the Republic of Austria”. From 1992 to 2001 he headed the partly state-owned, listed OMV and from 1993 to 2002 he also held the important position of President of the Austrian National Committee to the World Energy Council (today WEC Austria).

From 2002 to 2012, he served as the Austrian federal government’s capital markets commissioner. From 2000 to 2022, he was Vice President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.

His time as President of WEC Austria mainly includes the liberalization of the energy markets, with which the legislator opened the markets for electricity and gas to free competition. During the difficult political negotiations, Richard Schenz always sought dialogue. He was able to overcome differences with his humor, his calm, level-headed, authoritative manner and never lost sight of the big picture.

The World Energy Council Austria will honor the memory of its Honorary President and expresses its sincere condolences to the relatives of Richard Schenz.
